About Lee

Lee Wilbourne started doing what he likes best in 1981 by starting his own business after returning from Indianapolis where he was working with Cotter/Bignotti Racing as a fabrication mechanic for 3 years. Before that he had worked with Patrick Racing for 2 years after driving SCCA Racing Formula/F cars. His dreams of need for speed and doing the racing himself is something that has been a big part of Lee’s entire life. Lee grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and loved going to the road races in Tracy, Vacaville and Sacramento with his family. He remembers attending the second race held at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA. From 1981 to 1991, Race Car Welders was located in the San Francisco Bay Area. By 1991, Lee and his wife, Nancy, moved to Penn Valley in Nevada County in Northern California where they enjoy a large piece of property that is also home to Lee’s shop. Lee has been a Mechanic Fabricator for USAC/Champ, Cart/Champ, Sprint Cars, Midgets, Super Modifieds, NHRA, Top Fuel/Funny Car, built 2 World Championship Go Carts and  Experimental/Vintage Airplanes. You will see Lee at the races at Bonneville Salt Flats where he has worked on 5 record holders. One of his favorite stories is how he worked on the plans, drawings and renderings for Team Got Salt and helped to increase the speed from 308 miles an hour where they were stuck to 328 miles per hour. One of his newest projects in partnership with Jim Moser of Jim Moser Imagineering, is the brand new and revolutionary curved louvers die set.
